COLUMBINE

It is a spring favorite of many gardeners - and tough as nails !  The entire group has lovely flowers with an amazing variety of color choices.Aquilegia (also known as buttercups) has about 60–70 species.  These are mainly found in meadows, woodlands, and at higher altitudes throughout the Northern Hemisphere.  All are known for the spurred petals.  That is – their flowers are collected backwards at a point and form a trumpet. Most do well in partial sun or shade.  Preffering cool weather - they fade quickly as summer approaches. Dead heading spent flowers will many times promote additional floral spikes. They do well in any soil as long as it drains well.  Columbines are pretty much maintenance free.  Their sap can be irritating so avoid getting any on your skin when working with them ! Amazing varieties (pictures used with permission @SHUTTERSTOCK)
